Getting into the spirit of all things fall and Halloween in the month of October also comes with the territory that it is Breast Cancer Awareness month. You know, the month where products get stamped with the pink ribbon to urge people to buy it to make them feel like they’re contributing to the cause of curing breast cancer? Yeah, that month. This month.
I may come off as a “bitch” or an “asshole” and that’s because I have a personal grudge against the whole breast cancer business. I find it appalling that you tell someone you have cancer, and they’ll flock to you, telling you how sorry they are you have such a thing but by god, if you tell them you have HIV/AIDS, they’ll back the fuck up as if you’re the fucking plague.
Breast cancer gets an entire month of awareness to let people know that, you know, breast cancer is a thing. That it’s a disease that kills people. We get it. At least I get it ’cause I’m the one with anger issues when it comes to this topic. Meanwhile, other disease don’t get as much attention as breast cancer does. I have never seen such a sensationalization of something like this. I don’t see any other disease being promoted like breast cancer is.
It’s also disturbing of how breast cancer is promoted through the sexualization and objectification of women. Newsflash! Women aren’t the only ones who get breast cancer and pink doesn’t automatically appeal to one gender!
I think it’s good that we’re trying our damn hardest to rid the world of turmoil and stop people from dying from disease like breast cancer, but I don’t think the way we’re doing it now by being sexist and objectifying is the way to do it.
